While British negotiators and the prime minister Theresa May are apparently working to get a trade deal with the European Union before Brexit becomes fact at any cost, bowing to EU demands over the so-called Brexit bill and even keeping Britain in the EU longer through a ‘transition period’, the senior diplomat told Britain’s Daily Telegraph that leaving without a deal wouldn’t be a problem.
A clean Brexit with no ‘deal’ is by far the best option. Under WTO tariffs, we would milk the EU of more than £12 billion a year in tariff charges. Less than half that would be needed to compensate UK exporters for EU tariffs. The UK would also collect another c£10 billion a year in tariff charges on imports from outside the EU, money which currently goes to Brussels. We would also be saving the c£18 billion a year EU ‘membership fee’. And that’s without taking account of the cost to our public services of Freedom of Movement.
These remoaners are simply hanging on in the hope that somehow we will forget Brexit and give in.
We are currently negotiating from a position of weakness (largely because our political class are a shower). Walk away, adopt WTO rules and watch just how quickly fair and equitable agreements favourable to both sides are drawn up.
No deal is not simply an option, it is our best option.
The EU has nothing to offer us. The last thing we want is a ‘deal’ with the EU.
